The Roosevelt Island Tramway, one of only two commuter tramways operating in the United States*, had a daily ridership of 6,174, and 2 million passengers annually, in 2011. The tram opened in 1976 and spans the East River, connecting Roosevelt Island and Manhattan for a 3,140-foot, 3-minute trip. After a 2010 renovation, tramway ridership increased; approximately 2,400,000 ride the tram every year.
