There are currently 13,317 active taxi medallions, which allow taxis to operate in the City; most medallions are owned by individuals or small corporations.

Because 97% of yellow taxi pickups occur in Manhattan or at the airports, in 2013, the TLC sold 18,000 new street-hail permits for Boro Taxis, lime green livery cabs that can be hailed from the street in northern Manhattan and anywhere in the other boroughs, excluding at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. Boro taxis take an average total of 4,757 trips every day.

In June of 2013, roughly 20,000 rides were facilitated using “e-hail” apps Uber and Hailo.
